A Game of Highs and Lows

A Game of Highs and Lows

John Musson28 Mar - 15:07

Written by: Victor Shing

Final Score: 22-19

Having suffered from a tough loss last game, The Fins went back to Downhills for the last home game of the season.

First Half

The game started at a blistering pace, with our side scoring three tries in the first 15 minutes - almost as if we were playing sevens.

1. Paddy Power opened the scoring from a pick and go 5 meters from the try line.
2. French Will executed a clever dummy to break through for our second.
3. Big Will Thomas finished off a chase by Will G, dotting down from just half a meter out of our half after a mistake by the opposition 15.

Momentum was on our side, despite Gary van Heuven's offload to their winger just under our own post. However, shortly after, George Macduff made a brilliant break and Josh T fancied himself for a solo length-of-the-field effort, only to be reeled in regardless of his 3 teammates in space. A penalty was slotted soon after to keep the scoreboard ticking. The moment of the half came when “Mr. Never Drop Ball” Dave M shockingly fumbled a pass with an open space - leaving Victor in disbelief on the wing.

Second Half

The second period saw a mix of missed opportunities and disciplinary issues. Kobi nearly scored but instead offloaded straight to the opposition. Then came the game-changing moment: a cheap tackle from Stevenage earned them a penalty, which quickly escalated into a yellow card, then a red card after an unwise choice of words (Cxxt) directed at the referee.

We continued to create chances, but mistakes crept in. Toby knocked on with a huge gap in front of him after a strong carry from Gary and Will. Will later had the chance to extend our lead from a penalty, but his kick from the middle of the pitch cruelly hit the post.

Despite all the chaos, Dave managed to seal the game with a final try—though he could have passed instead of going himself (Great support Victor!).

Overall, A strong start, but discipline and handling errors nearly cost us. Still, a hard-fought 29-24 win in the end.

PS: Victor did not drop a single high ball.
